Pool Heater Installation, Without the October Scramble.

Gas or heat pump, sized to your pool and plumbed to code. Plan it now and skip the fall rush when everyone wants warm water at once.

Every Fall, the Phone Does the Same Thing

The first week the overnight lows dip into the forties, pool heater installation calls double. It happens every October like clockwork. Homeowners who swam comfortably through September walk out to a 68 degree pool, decide this is the year, and want heat by the weekend. By then the install calendar is full and distributors are thin on the popular 400,000 BTU models.

So here is the advice we give everyone who asks. If a heater is on your list, do it in late summer. The price is the same. The lead time is shorter. And you get the unit dialed in while the water is still warm enough to enjoy the result. We install heaters across Riverside and Corona all year, but the August clients always have the easier experience.

The first real decision is not the brand. It is the fuel.

Gas Heats Fast. A Heat Pump Heats Cheap.

Almost every consultation comes down to this trade-off, and neither answer is wrong. It depends on how you swim.

Gas heaters are the sprinters. A Raypak 406A or Pentair MasterTemp 400 will lift a typical pool one to two degrees an hour, in any weather, on demand. Friday afternoon you flip it on, Saturday morning the pool is 84. If you have a spa attached, gas is close to mandatory. Nobody wants to wait four hours for the spa to warm up. The catch is the gas bill when you run it hard.

Heat pumps are the marathoners. A Hayward HeatPro or Pentair UltraTemp pulls warmth out of the air, which our climate supplies generously, and moves it into the water for a fraction of the operating cost. They heat slowly, a few degrees a day, so they are built for holding a set temperature over weeks, not for spur-of-the-moment spa nights. For year-round lap swimmers they are the clear winner.

Solar comes up in nearly every conversation too. It works, but as a supplement, not a substitute. Short winter days mean you still need a real heater behind it. Better to hear that now than after the panels are on the roof.

BTUs, Gas Lines, and What Your Meter Can Handle

Sizing is simple math that almost nobody does. A 400,000 BTU heater on a 20,000 gallon pool gains roughly a degree and a half per hour. Drop to a 250,000 BTU unit to save money up front and that same warm-up takes nearly twice as long, with the burner running the whole time. Undersizing is the expensive option. It just bills you monthly instead of once.

The gas line is where installs go sideways. A 400,000 BTU heater at full fire demands more gas than most existing pool lines were sized to deliver, especially on longer runs from the meter. Starve the burner and you get soot, short cycling, and a heat exchanger that dies years early. We measure the run, check the pipe diameter, and confirm your meter can feed the house and the heater at the same time before we quote anything.

Then the details that inspectors actually look for: clearances around the unit, venting if it sits under a cover, bonding on the electrical side, and a clean tie-in to your automation panel. If your current heater is limping along and you are not sure it is truly done, our heater repair page covers when a fix still makes sense.

Quick Answers Before You Call

How long does a pool heater installation take?

Most swaps where the gas line and pad are already in place take one day. If we need to run a new gas line or upgrade your meter, plan on two visits: one for the line and inspection, one for the heater.

Do I need a permit for a new pool heater?

Usually yes. Gas piping and the electrical hookup are permitted work in most cities we serve. We pull the permit and meet the inspector so you do not have to.

Gas or heat pump if I want to swim year-round?

Heat pump, in most cases. If the pool holds a set temperature for months at a time, the lower run cost wins. Add gas only if you also have a spa you want hot in twenty minutes.

Will the new heater work with my automation system?

Yes. Modern heaters from Pentair, Hayward, Jandy, and Raypak all talk to the major automation panels. We wire the communication cable and set it up so you control temperature from your phone.

What size heater do I actually need?

Gallons, surface area, and how fast you want the temperature to climb. For a typical pool and spa combo, 400,000 BTU gas is the standard answer, but we run the numbers on every quote rather than guessing.
