What Santa Ana winds actually do to your pool chemistry
Four things happen at once, and the combination is what gets you.
The dust loads the water with phosphates
Santa Ana winds pick up desert dust, agricultural soil from Inland Empire farmland, and fine debris from miles away. It does not just float on the surface either. Wind-driven waves and splash-out work it down into the water column. Dust and organic debris are a known phosphate source, and phosphates are fertilizer for algae. A pool that was perfectly balanced on Monday can bloom by Thursday if the phosphate load spikes hard enough.
Evaporation goes through the roof
Low humidity plus sustained wind is the exact combination that pulls water off a pool surface fastest. Chemicals do not evaporate with the water, so you would expect chlorine to concentrate. In practice the opposite problem shows up. Owners top off with fresh water and skip the rebalance, sanitizer gets diluted against a rising debris load, and chlorine demand runs ahead of what is actually in the water. The test strip reads fine. The pool is not fine.
Heat compounds all of it
Santa Ana events around here frequently arrive with a temperature spike, because the same offshore pressure pattern that drives the wind also pushes hot dry desert air toward the coast. Warmer water breaks chlorine down faster under UV and gives algae a shorter reproductive cycle. A pool that would shrug off a few low-chlorine days in November can go green in 24 to 48 hours when wind, heat, and phosphates land together.
The debris chokes circulation
Leaves, dust, and windblown organic matter fill skimmer baskets and load filters fast. A partially clogged filter cannot turn the water over at the rate your system was designed for, and that leaves dead spots: corners, steps, behind the ladder. Chlorine does not reach those places well. Algae does not need much of an opening.
Phosphate-rich dust, diluted chlorine, heat-driven chemical breakdown, weak circulation. That is the recipe, and it is why so many Corona pools go green on the same weekend.
Green water is not always the same algae
Treating the wrong type wastes time and chemicals, so it is worth knowing what you are looking at.
Green algae
The usual post-wind bloom in this area. Fast growing, free floating, and typically the direct result of a phosphate and chlorine imbalance. It clouds the water and often clears with a proper shock and brush routine if you catch it early.
Mustard algae
Shows up as a yellowish-brown film, usually on shaded walls or steps. It resists chlorine better than green algae does, and a standard shock frequently is not enough on its own.
Black algae
The hard one. It forms stubborn spotted colonies with a protective layer that ordinary chlorine cannot fully get through, and clearing it takes brushing plus a targeted treatment.
If your pool has gone green more than once after a windy stretch, get a technician to confirm which type you are actually dealing with. Repeating the same shock and expecting a different outcome is how people burn a whole summer on it.
Prevention checklist: before and after a Santa Ana wind event
Before the wind picks up, assuming the forecast gives you a heads up, run the filter longer than normal for 24 to 48 hours so circulation is strong going in. Test and adjust chlorine and pH so you start from a balanced baseline instead of playing catch-up. If you have a cover and a multi-day event is coming, use it.
During and immediately after:
- Skim floating debris daily, since dust and leaves left sitting will break down in the water
- Clean or backwash the filter promptly, because a loaded filter cannot keep up with a wind-driven debris spike
- Retest chlorine and pH within a day or two of the event rather than waiting for your normal weekly schedule
- Brush walls and steps, especially the shaded areas where algae gets a foothold first
- Check and treat phosphate levels if you have a test kit, or ask your service tech to check
For wind-prone properties, especially in Eagle Glen, Dos Lagos, and the hillside neighborhoods, a few ongoing habits help. Keep landscaping trimmed back from the pool edge to cut down the organic debris load. If your property consistently collects heavy dust, a phosphate remover is worth adding to routine maintenance. And do not treat top-off water as a reset. Rebalance the chemistry after every significant top-off.
